In education news, we are delighted to partner with the Education Support Centres in Ireland (ESCI) to develop a suite of CPD programmes to support schools on their Junk Kouture journey, funded by Creative Ireland.
Dr Siobhan Kavanagh, Chairperson of the ESCI facilitated an excellent launch webinar for Junk Kouture in late September. Along with Junk Kouture CEO, Troy Armour, and Director of Education, Dr Dee Duffy, the webinar hosted three secondary school teachers – Joanne O’Hora (Presentation College, Tuam), Caroline Murray, (YouthReach, Blanchardstown), and Michael English (Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles) – who shared stories and tips about their experience of the competition.

About the competition:
Junk Kouture offers a free to enter year-round creative programme for all second-level students between the ages of 13- 18 years. Our primary creative outlet is the Junk Kouture fashion design competition where students are challenged to transform everyday ‘junk’ into wearable fashion before showcasing their finished sustainable designs and backstories to the world in a series of finals.
This is a competition that encourages students and teachers across curricula to get involved – it is not solely the domain of the art students. Junk Kouture encourages the next generation of creative, innovative thinkers. It will inspire your metalwork, engineer, science, home-economics, or woodwork students to get thinking about new ways to re-create materials for a more sustainable future.
About the CPDs:
The aim of the CPDs is to familiarise teachers with Junk Kouture. By the end of the course, teachers will understand the mission behind Junk Kouture, how to introduce the competition into their classroom, and consider how students will develop key personal development skills throughout the Junk Kouture process.
The course is divided into short, accessible chapters that teachers can review in their own time and pace. Short quizzes throughout the course facilitate users to reflect and absorb the course information. The estimated time to complete the course is approximately one hour. On successful completion of the course, a downloadable certificate is awarded in recognition of the coursework completed.
Junk Kouture CPD courses are supported and run in conjunction with the Education Support Centres Ireland (ESCI), and funded by Creative Ireland.
