✨ Alumni Spotlight | Roisin Heffernan

From Junk Kouture designer to founder of SoRoe Design, it’s been fantastic to continue following Roisin Heffernan’s journey beyond the Junk Kouture stage. A few months into Full Circle Fashion: Delivered, our initiative with DHL Express Ireland, Roisin has been busy growing SoRoe, with DHL supporting the logistics behind the brand as it continues to develop and reach new audiences. And there’s another exciting milestone just around the corner... Next month, Roisin and SoRoe return to Ireland Fashion Week, following the brand’s runway debut in 2025. Having also returned to Junk Kouture as a judge earlier this year, Roisin’s journey is a brilliant example of how creativity can continue to evolve long after the competition ends, from young designer to building a brand of her own. “Junk Kouture showed me that I could use what I have to get to where I want to go. It gave me the confidence to be proud of myself, and was the first time that I saw that I could use my creative side for something.”

From Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne in Dingle to winning Junk Kouture Ireland and going on to study at Central Saint Martins in London – what a journey for our 2019 winner, Maxim O’Sullivan! Maxim took home the Irish title with his incredible design ‘Cinematic’, inspired by his family’s history and created using materials from his family’s cinema. That early experimentation with unexpected materials has stayed with him. Maxim went on to study Fashion Design Knitwear at Central Saint Martins, where his work continues to explore materials, their possibilities and the stories they can tell. His studies have also taken him to Paris, where he had the opportunity to intern with fashion houses for a year. Looking back on his Junk Kouture experience, Maxim shared: “Junk Kouture showed me that I could use what I have to get to where I want to go. It gave me the confidence to be proud of myself, and was the first time that I saw that I could use my creative side for something.” We love seeing where those first creative experiments can lead. From ‘Cinematic’ in 2019 to Central Saint Martins and Paris, we can’t wait to see what’s next for Maxim!

“Junk Kouture has had a major impact on my career choices so far”

From winning the Junk Kouture Irish Grand Final in 2021 with Iconoclastic Fantastic when studying at Colaiste Bride Enniscorthy to building a career in tailoring and costume for the stage, we’re delighted to reconnect with Junk Kouture alum Alicia Roestermundt. After finishing school, Alicia spent a voluntary year in the costume department at Staatstheater Darmstadt where she discovered a love for working on stage productions. She went on to begin a three-year apprenticeship as a men’s tailor at Staatstheater Stuttgart developing her skills in traditional tailoring while gaining experience in the creative and organisational work behind theatre productions. Now entering the final year of her apprenticeship, Alicia says: “Junk Kouture has had a major impact on my career choices so far.” We love seeing where that first experience of designing, creating and experimenting can lead.

Since competing in Junk Kouture in 2021 and travelling to the International Women’s Forum @iwfglobal in New York with Junk Kouture in 2024 - my journey with creativity was founded during my Junk Kouture experience”. @evebettynelson is a testament to the idea of pursuing your passion, believing in it and changing alongside it. “As the world around us is constantly adapting - the clothes we wear must last and have multiple ways to wear. The way we choose to present ourselves, is like our passion - ingrained within us and modifying as we grow.”
