How Junk Kouture Can Support Sustainability in Design & Technology

Our recent webinar with the Design & Technology Association explored how Junk Kouture can help schools bring sustainability, textiles and circular design into the classroom.
D&T teacher Saffron Pullen shared how she introduced Junk Kouture at a school with no established textiles provision or dedicated budget. What began as a small extracurricular project went on to support students through UK and World Finals, help one student progress to the London College of Fashion, and strengthen the case for more textiles equipment in school.
The programme has also helped embed reuse more widely across the department, with donated and reclaimed materials now used across projects and less money spent on consumables.
For teachers, the key message was simple: you don’t need to redesign your whole curriculum. Junk Kouture can work as a single lesson, short project, extracurricular activity or full competition journey, supported by lesson plans, worksheets and classroom resources.
It’s a practical way to develop creativity, problem-solving, confidence and sustainable thinking while giving students the freedom to experiment with materials in new ways.
